DIY Circle Lace Scallop Layer Skirt

I finally found a use for the nude mesh fabric I bought ages ago. I’m quite pleased with the results – A flirty and swishy layer skirt ๐Ÿ™‚

This was made using the circle, gathered skirt method.

Tools:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Pins
  • Measuring Tape
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Lining Fabric (make sure it is soft and floaty – I used Jersey)
  • Waistband Fabric (this can be same as the lining fabric as long as it is not stretchy)
  • Lace ย Fabric
  • Teacup
  • Marker
  • Invisible Zip

  1. Lovely idea. Just wanted to clarify, does that equation give a enough room in the waist for gathering or do I need to add a bit onto it?

    1. Hi Sophie, the equation is enough for your waist (pretty much exactly).
With this pattern, it’s more of a guideline minimum, so definitely add a bit or a lot more depending on how much gathering you want.
I personally made the opening a fair bit larger to account for small mistakes and fix them with gathering.
      I hope that helps ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Should i leave seam allowances for zipper while making pattern or leave seam allowances while calculating radius.

    1. Hi Santam,

This question is only important if you are making this skirt without the gathering aspect. I made this skirt waist quite a bit larger that my actual waist so the zipper allowance wasn’t an issue. I would say make your skirt a few inches longer than intended to start off with and after you’ve cut out your initial inner circle and zipper opening, play with the waist opening size and gathering (with basting stitches) until you are happy with how it looks. So if you decide to follow this DIY exactly and gather the top, then the zip allowance shouldn’t be an issue.
But if you were intended on not gathering the top and making a smoother top bit, I would incorporate seam allowances it into the radius. So if your waist is 65cm and you need an extra 2cm for zipper allowance I would calculate the radius from a circumference of 67cm. BUT REMEMBER, this is if you are making a skirt where the waist would fit you exactly and where you would ignore the gathering step in this project.

      I hope that helps!
